How We Learn
Learning Through Inquiry
Through inquiry-based learning, our students ask questions, investigate ideas, make connections, reflect on their learning, and take meaningful action. They develop both academic understanding and the confidence to become thoughtful, responsible, and engaged members of their communities
Approaches to Learning
The PYP helps students develop lifelong learning skills that they use in school and beyond.
Thinking Skills – Solving problems, making connections, and thinking critically and creatively.
Research Skills – Asking questions, investigating, observing, and evaluating information.
Communication Skills – Expressing ideas, listening actively, collaborating, and presenting learning.
Social Skills – Building relationships, working effectively with others, and appreciating diverse perspectives.

Programme of Inquiry
At Leland Public School, learning is designed to help students make meaningful connections across all subject areas. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) school, we use a transdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning. Explore our Units of Inquiry by grade level below.
IB Portfolios
IB Portfolios showcase each student’s learning journey throughout the Primary Years Programme. By collecting work samples, reflections, and evidence of growth, students document their progress, celebrate their achievements, and demonstrate how their underestanding deepens over time.

All PYP units are taught under the following Transdisciplinary Themes. Concepts and ideas become more complex as children explore these themes up through 5th grade.

This 3rd/4th grade unit shows how all disciplines are connected to the Central Idea and Lines of Inquiry.

As the culminating experience of the IB Primary Years Programme, the PYP Exhibition provides fifth-grade students with the opportunity to showcase their growth as inquirers by researching a real-world issue, collaborating with mentors and peers, and sharing their learning with the community.
