Elementary Philosophy
An Elementary Experience Designed for Every Learner
At our school, we believe childhood is a journey of joyful discovery, deep curiosity, and individualized growth. Our educational philosophy combines proven instructional practices with an inspiring, global framework to help every student thrive.
- Multi-Age Learning Communities: We group students in intentional multi-age classrooms—combining Young 5s and Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, and 3rd and 4th grades—allowing children to learn at their own developmental pace, build strong peer mentorships, and stay with teachers who truly know them. Our 5th graders enjoy a dedicated standalone year designed to build leadership, confidence, and a smooth transition to middle school.
- Inquiry- & Play-Based Foundations: In our early years, learning begins with play—the natural language of young children. As students grow, that play evolves into rich, inquiry-based learning and hands-on experiences where students ask big questions, experiment, and solve real-world problems.
- Academic Excellence Rooted in Science: As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, we foster globally minded thinkers. Our literacy instruction is grounded in the Science of Reading, ensuring every child gains a strong, evidence-based foundation in decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension.

- Tailored Support & Small Class Sizes: We keep class sizes small so every child is seen, heard, and valued. Through small-group differentiated instruction, our teachers tailor daily lessons to match each student's unique strengths and needs. When additional support is needed, we offer seamless Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions right where students are, ensuring no one falls through the cracks and everyone is empowered to succeed.

The Leland Experience
Learning Beyond the Classroom:
At Leland, education doesn’t stop at the classroom door… it extends into the vibrant world around us! We believe that true understanding happens when students connect their classroom learning to authentic, real-life experiences.
- Early Elementary Community Explorers: In our early years, learning is rooted in our local community. Students step out into the neighborhood on targeted field trips that bring our International Baccalaureate (IB) Units of Inquiry to life. Whether visiting local businesses, nature preserves, or civic centers, young learners see firsthand how the concepts they study function in the real world.
- Upper Elementary Michigan Journeys: As our students grow, so does their horizon. Upper elementary learners expand their scope beyond the local area, traveling to key historical, ecological, and cultural destinations across Michigan. The pinnacle of this journey is an unforgettable overnight camp experience, where students build independence, deepen friendships, and practice hands-on environmental science in the great outdoors.
Through these immersive real-world opportunities, the Leland experience provides a well-rounded, unforgettable foundation—shaping curious, confident, and globally aware thinkers every step of the way.
