Superintendent's Message
Superintendent's Message

Welcome to the Leland Public School District!
It is an honor to serve as Superintendent of the Leland School and to partner with our dedicated staff, families, and community in supporting the success of every student. Being new to the superintendent role here this year, I am struck by the remarkable tradition of excellence and the genuine community spirit that make Leland such a special place.
This year, we celebrate a remarkable achievement: Leland High School has been ranked #8 among Michigan high schools in the U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools list. This honor reflects the collective efforts of our outstanding students, talented educators, supportive families, and engaged community. It is evidence of the extraordinary opportunities that a small school can provide when everyone is committed to helping young people thrive.
Looking ahead, our focus remains on bringing our district’s values to life each day:
We make decisions to serve students first. Every choice we make will be grounded in what is best for our students’ growth and learning.
We aspire to provide world-class opportunities. From rigorous academics to innovative experiences, we are committed to preparing our students for success in college, careers, and life.
We build transgenerational relationships. Our school is a community hub where relationships across ages and generations enrich learning and strengthen belonging.
We ensure everyone feels welcome and celebrated. Leland will continue to be a place where all students, families, and staff know they belong.
We develop critical thinkers for global citizenship. Our graduates will leave ready to contribute, lead, and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
We foster environments of consistency and transparency. We are committed to honest communication and stable, supportive systems that allow students and staff to flourish.
As we work together towards realizing these values I am excited to listen, learn, and lead alongside this community. Thank you for your trust and support as we work to uphold the proud traditions of Leland while continuing to grow and innovate for the future.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ryan Huppert

Dear LPS Families,
As many of you may have already noticed, the upcoming school year has Labor Day occurring very late in the calendar. This creates a unique scheduling challenge for school districts across Michigan. While this is not a recurring issue, it does require a one-time adjustment to our school start date this coming year. To avoid extending the academic calendar into the third week of June, the 26-27 school year will begin on Tuesday, September 1 and end on Friday, June 11. The Labor Day weekend will remain four days long, with no school on both Friday and Monday. We recognize that our school community values the tradition of starting after Labor Day, and the disruptions this can create are not lost on us. At the same time, we are not alone in facing this challenge—many districts across the area are making similar adjustments this year for the same reason. It is important to emphasize that this is not a long-term change in practice, but rather a response to the specific timing of the calendar for this next year only. Our goal in making this adjustment is to strike a balance that allows us to finish the year at an appropriate time in early summer. We appreciate the understanding, flexibility, and continued support of our families as we make this one-time adjustment.
Respectfully, Ryan Huppert Superintendent of Leland Public School
