LELAND MIDDLE SCHOOL

STUDENT SUPPORT

Supporting Every Learner

At Leland Public School, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow, succeed, and thrive. We are committed to meeting students where they are by providing a wide range of academic and social-emotional supports designed to help each learner reach their full potential.

We believe that academic achievement and social-emotional well-being go hand in hand. By supporting both, we help students develop the confidence, resilience, and skills needed to become caring, knowledgeable, and lifelong learners.

Our Commitment

At Leland Public School, we believe that every child can succeed when provided with the right support, encouragement, and opportunities to grow. Our academic and social-emotional supports work together to help students become confident learners, caring classmates, and resilient individuals.

Our School Improvement Team includes members from our administration, interventionists, and counselors.  This team meets weekly to assess student needs, and ensure all students are fully supported both academically and behaviorally.

Academic Supports

We provide a variety of supports to help every student achieve academic success.

  • Teachers use a variety of instructional strategies to meet the unique learning needs, interests, and readiness levels of all students

  • Our Advisory Period gives middle and high schoolers dedicated time during the school day to stay on track. Students use this time for quick academic check-ins, one-on-one help from teachers, making up missed work, or collaborating with classmates on group projects

  • Students who benefit from additional targeted support may receive:

    • Push-In support within the classroom
    • Pull-Out small group intervention
    • Evidence-based instruction in foundational reading and mathematics skills
    • Individualized instruction based on specific student needs

  • Students may receive individualized academic support through partnerships with:

    • Community volunteers
    • Leland High School National Honor Society Members (when available)

Social-Emotional Supports

Helping students feel safe, connected, and supported is an important part of learning.

  • Our counselors help students develop:

    • Positive relationships
    • Emotional awareness
    • Conflict resolution skills
    • Healthy coping strategies
  • Our SEL and Behavioral Health Specialist partners with students, families, and staff to provide resources and support that promote student success.

  • Peer to Peer is an ISD led program that builds student capacity.  Peer participants serve as mentors, role models, and friends to students with ASD or other social and learning disabilities. The Peer to Peer group meets monthly to take part in adult-led structured activities that provide opportunities for students to learn from each other and learn to accept and tolerate differences. This program builds strong school communities.

  • Students and families have access to therapeutic services that support emotional well-being and mental health. This support is part of the School Wellness Program, a partnership with the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department.
