A huge thank you to students, staff, parents, and THE PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION (insert exciting DJ noise here) for donating time, energy, and joy to make LPS the glowing place that it is this holiday season. The LPS community is exceptional because of hearts and minds like yours.

PTO WISHES ALL MEMBERS A HAPPY HOLIDAY BREAK
As 2023 draws to a close, PTO officers Emily Miezio, Ana Garcia, Dan Worth, and Stacey Brugeman want to make sure members know how grateful they are for you. This month, countless volunteer parents and teachers from a pool of more than 115 members stepped forward to: decorate a school spirit tree at the Old Art Building; bake nearly 1,000-holiday treats for the “Baking Spirits Bright” initiative for school staff (pictured); volunteer in classrooms; donate games requested by teachers; or attend PTO meetings, Board meetings, or Coffee & Tea meetings. YOU make Leland a great place to be, and 2024 holds as much promise as ever.
Follow along on Instagram @lelandpto, and have an excellent holiday break.

"A fun activity we did in AP Lit where students were given a list of tone words and had to categorize them into tone families, i.e. anger, happiness, etc. It was a lot of fun listening to them debate what words should go into each family." - Mrs. Walter

8th-grade boys basketball went UNDEFEATED this season, made growth as a team, and showed great sportsmanship. Thank you to Ryan Knudsen for coaching this team!

Elementary and Middle School students and staff visited the 5th grade Wax Museum this morning! Each 5th grader chose an explorer to research. At the wax museum, they presented themselves as their chosen explorer and shared their explorer's stories. These research and presentation skills will help prepare students for the 5th Grade Exhibition that will take place in the spring.

A huge congratulations to Fiona Moord (Haverford College) and Olive Ryder (Kalamazoo College) for officially signing to play college volleyball! We are so proud of you. LPS will always be your original
biggest fans.

Second graders hosted their penpals from the Cordia senior living home in Traverse City at their Christmas concert last night!

"The concert (last night) was terrific. I cannot express how proud I am of the kids. Eryn Sluiter truly is amazing. The work she and Mary Newman have done to make our concerts incredible this year is beautiful! How special!" - Mrs. Suttmann

The Honors Choir just opened up tonight's holiday concert with an amazing performance. Now it's our very cute, and very excited, K-2 students turn!

Today LPS hosted a College Panel for our 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. For this event, LPS alumni come back and share information about attending college in a Q&A format. Thanks to Mrs. Lowe for organizing and running this event, and thanks to our alumni for giving back to LPS.

"Honors choir and 6th grade music caroling around town. We went to The Lodge, Effie's place, The Old Art Building, The Merc, Harbor House, and the Post Office!" - Mrs. Newman

High School Robotics recruiting meetings:
- Monday 3:30-4:30pm December 18, - Wednesday 3:30-4:30pm December 20,
in the Robotics Room
(Across from High School Library)
FIRST® Robotics Competition teams design, program, and build a robot starting with a standard kit of parts and common set of rules to play in a themed head-to-head challenge. We also build a brand, develop community partnerships for support, and work to promote STEAM in our local community.
We are recruiting high school and middle school students to join Team 9568 and compete in the 2024 FIRST® Robotics Challenge season.
Join us next week for our information sessions!
Season runs from January to mid-March with most sessions after school. For winter sport athletes, we will also have opportunities to participate in robotics during the school day (lunch and select advisory periods) and select evenings and weekends.
We are looking for everyone who wants to imagine, design, build, code, draw, drive, scout, work with power tools, read, learn, and have a great time. No experience necessary.
We are sponsored by NASA.
Parents and volunteers are encouraged to participate.
Because our programs are More Than Robots®, FIRST participants are guided by a signature set of Core Values to conduct research, fundraise, design, build, and showcase their achievements. Our thrilling, sports-like challenges build their self-confidence and collaborative problem-solving skills and have a proven and lasting impact on STEAM learning and interest. Our participants and alumni gain access to education and career discovery opportunities, connections to exclusive scholarships and employers, and a place in the FIRST community for life.
